A Chocolate Party for Kids!

If you’re not inviting kids to your wedding reception, and you’re planning an off-site babysitter-led kiddie party, the big new trend is planning a foodie activity for the kids to enjoy. In the past, they’ve topped their own personal pizzas, built their own sandwiches, topped cupcakes, made sundaes…and now the chocolate party is a hit with kids.

I just found Godiva’s new baking kit that lets kids bake up a storm, having their own little Top Chef: Just Desserts episode in the kitchen of a friend who doesn’t mind a mess…and with babysitters who will run oven duty.

From the Godiva site:

With good adult supervision, the kids will be whipping up delicious, chocolatey desserts in no time – and loving every minute of the stirring and baking as much as the finished product. A big, bright, orange mixing bowl is filled to overflowing with these child-friendly fixings: Chocolate Chunk Cake and Frosting Mixes, White Cupcake and Frosting Mixes, Godiva Gems Milk Chocolate Solids and Milk Chocolate Truffles to swirl through the batter or toss across the top, Godiva Solid Milk Chocolate and Milk Chocolate Caramel bars, Godiva Cocoa Sampler for dusting and drinking, and colorful, keepsake measuring cups. (2 lbs., 14.7 oz.)

Let parents know ahead of time that the kids will be elbow-deep in chocolate and frosting, and to dress kids appropriately. Some party hosts even give kids DIY-personalized tee shirts to wear while whipping up frostings, as well as craft-store-bought hats to keep frosting out of kids’ hair. Kids love to get messy, especially in the kitchen, but you don’t want their pricy outfits to get demolished.

As an alternative to the Godiva multi-recipe basket, it’s quite affordable to stock up on cupcake-making supplies in bright colors, load up on mini M&Ms and chocolate chips, let kids theme their cupcakes (such as a silver-liner ‘spaceship cupcake’) and take photos of the party to share with parents and with the bride and groom.

And as a special touch: have the kids decorate a cupcake or mini cake for the bride and groom!

Provide take-home boxes for the kids’ baking creations, if there are any left!
