Spring Trend Watch: Watercolors

February 3rd, 2012 by Lisa Olson

Even though it’s still January, the weather in Texas is making it feel like spring is right around the corner. I’m already tempted to hunt down the pastels in the back of my closet, and I can’t resist buying pretty flowers for my room. One event trend that I keep seeing pop up all over the web is watercolors, and I think it’s a beautiful theme for any springtime event. If you’re planning a spring wedding or party, why not incorporate some of this pretty color theme?

Between that beautiful dress and the bouquet that complements it perfectly, this might be one of my favorite bridesmaid shots ever! Watercolor dresses are such a unique statement, and I’m sure your bridesmaids would be thrilled to enjoy your day in this pretty little number. If pastels aren’t your thing, look for a watercolor patterned dress that uses bright, bold hues, like red, yellow, and green. At this wedding, the bouquets picked up the colors of the dress, but I think all-white flowers would really pop! Picture via Ashley Rose Photography.

Watercolor dresses are definitely not just for bridesmaids! Take inspiration from the bride on the left, who wore this peachy, floor-length gown at her rehearsal dinner. I think that these dresses would be just as fun for any party, from a bridal shower, to a fancy birthday party, to a garden tea party. I can kind of picture the dress on the left as a daring wedding gown, can’t you? Pictures via The Observatory and New York Magazine.

The easiest, and definitely one of the most beautiful, ways to incorporate watercolors into your event is through your paper products. These invitations show off two gorgeous ways to do so. The invitation on the left is romantic and modern, thanks to its dramatic colors and abstract shapes. The invitation on the right is rustic and sweet, with the information framed in hand-painted trees. Both would make beautiful first impressions for your special event! Pictures via Nancy Neil and Ulysses Photography.

Invitations are great, but carrying the watercolor theme throughout your event’s paper products will really elevate it to the next level. I am blown away by the detail in that map on the left–can you just imagine getting this little work of art in the mail? In case you couldn’t tell, the escort cards on the right are from the same wedding as the abstract wedding invitations above. I love how they used the same color and design, but since everything was done by hand, every card is a little bit unique and different. Alright, this is my favorite idea of the day! The flowers are one of the decorative highlights of an event, and it’s so sad that they’re never quite the same after the big day, even if you dry and preserve your bouquet. I love the idea of getting a watercolor painting made of your starring blooms! This is also such a perfect gift idea for a bride on her anniversary, and I’m sure anyone would treasure such a personalized piece of art. Pictures via Jen Huang Photography.

Atlanta Wedding at Cator Woolford Gardens by Patterson Photography

February 3rd, 2012 by Callie Rogers

Hmmm, things I love about this wedding: the bride’s hair (pin it), gorgeous contrasting bridesmaids dresses with flowers (pin that, too), grotto lights (you know the drill)… Ok let’s face it. There is a LOT to love about this wedding. Another clear example of why attention to detail, and staying true to your personal style goes a long way when planning your I-do’s. But enough from me, see it for yourselves! Pictures by Patterson Photography.

Can you give us an overview of the event?: The garden wedding was an intimate affair portraying a romantic tuscan feel.

Was there a specific theme or style?
: The wedding was centered around the romantic tuscan theme. It featured soft lacey accents with bronze fixtures. The abundance of flowers in the garden then created a beautiful natural feel. Authentic Italian food was also served to compliment the groom’s heritage and their love of Italian food.

What inspired the theme or style?: The Bride’s hopeless romantic side coupled with the Groom’s heritage inspired the theme of the wedding. The proposal also led way to the garden style since they got engaged in a garden.

What were your playful twists that made the event unique?: Butterflies were released to represent their love. Lavendar was also thrown to shower the couple with blessings as they left the reception. The Bride and Groom’s favorite artist from their church sang their first dance. Balsamic and olive oil bottles with custom labels to match the invitations were given to guests as wedding favors.

Did you DIY any of the details?: The Bride made her crystal belt for her wedding dress. It cost less and she was able to create the perfect accent to her dream dress.
A wishing tree was created from branches found in the Bride’s parent’s yard. The branches were decorated with crystal ornaments and were placed in a glass vase surrounded by moss. Tags were then custom made to be used by guests to write wishes. They were then placed on the tree.

What was the most memorable moment?: The most memorable moment was releasing butterflies right before we were pronounced as husband and wife. It signified how our love has turned into a beautiful life together.

Tell us about the food and desserts.: The food was Italian inspired, including homemade pasta and braciole. Antipasta was served for cocktail hour and lasagne bites were included in the spread. The desserts included cannolis, chocolate truffles, and chocolate swirl cookies made by the Bride’s Grandmother. Three varieties of decadant chocolate cakes were placed on altering pedestals to form the wedding cake. Crystals encrusted the cakes and the tallest cake was topped with a swarovski crystal “M” cake topper.

What kind of energy did your entertainment give the event?: The entertainment gave a classy and uplifiting energy. Frank Sinatra and other romantic love songs were played to enhance the theme of the wedding.

If there was one thing you could change, what would it be?: If there was one thing I could change, it would be to make the celebration last longer!

Tell us how you met.  Was it love at first sight, blind date, friends forever?  We want to know the particulars!: As Matthew and Ashley’s mothers divulged information about their son and daughter while working together, they realized that they had many similar interests and goals in life. Matthew and Ashley then started talking on facebook, after their names were given to each other to look up. A phone call later and they each knew they had a special connection never experienced before. They soon met in person and the rest is history! Matthew and Ashley had that instant spark that told them they would spend the rest of their lives together.

Describe your wedding in one-two sentences so that someone who didn’t attend can envision it.: The wedding was centered around the love of Matthew and Ashley. The venue set the stage for the romance and elegance that was the theme throughout the wedding.

We want to know about all the wedding details.  Was it small and intimate or big and traditional?
: The wedding was small and intimate, being held outside in the perfect atmosphere for love.

What was the best wedding advice you received?: The best wedding advice I received was to enjoy every moment of the wedding day while not letting any unexpected issues get in the way of celebrating the big day!

What were the honeymoon plans?:
We went on a cruise to the western carribbean, visiting Cozumel, Honduras, and Belize.

Under the Big Top: Circus Party Ideas

February 2nd, 2012 by Staley Mcllwain

The circus is coming to my town soon and growing up I loved going to the circus. The elephants, the clowns and of course all the sweet treats were always my favorite part about going.  For my 4th birthday I had a circus party and I remember my mom going all out. She had my dad make these wooden clowns that she painted and the cake had circus animals all over it. Well party elements have come along way since 1994 and I have found some really great ideas for putting together your own circus party!

I am a sucker for a good vintage font and these invitations are a vintage font lover’s dream.  Perfect for putting together a vintage circus party theme. It also puts together a great color scheme with the red, yellow and aqua- much like the old time-y circuses colors. These are available on Etsy from Lemonade Moments for a great price and has similar printable party elements! (via Lemonade Moments)

Of course it wouldn’t be a circus party without a tent! I love this dessert table with the canopy hung above it for a “tent” feel. How adorable are those clown cupcakes too? I know a lot of kids afraid of clowns but you can’t be scared of these sweet treats! Other circus food staples include popcorn and my favorite circus treat-snowcones! (via Kara’s Party Ideas)

It wouldn’t be a fun kids party without games and this party featured all kinds of circus themed games. I love this “Clown Relay” where the kids dress up like clowns with oversized clothes, wigs and bow ties (don’t forget the clown shoes!) then race to the finish line without falling down! Some other game ideas may be carnival themed like ring toss or fishing pond. (via The Fickle Pickle)

Photobooths are great ways to capture memories and I love this “clown booth” idea! Set up different silly props like mustaches, fake noses, etc.. and make sure all your guests stop by to strike a clown-y pose. I love how the frame looks like a circus tent and it will make your guests feel like they are taking center ring under your big top! (via Birds Party)

What would be a good idea for circus party favors? Sweet circus treats, of course! I love going to a party where the favor is edible because I know its something I will always use (or eat!). For a circus party, try animal crackers and cotton candy. These are kid-friendly staples that all ages will love. (via Ruby Press)

Now I am wishing I was going to the circus this year or at least a circus party!

North Carolina Wedding at Trillium Lake and Links Club by The Decisive Moment Photography

February 2nd, 2012 by Callie Rogers

There are some wedding color palettes that are just classic. For me, soft pink and light green scream spring/summer wedding! Romantic and still playful, the pair make for gorgeous details, gorgeous flowers and gorgeous pictures! I happy to share one such wedding with you today from The Decisive Moment Photography. Kara and Jeff wed in an intimate ceremony in the beautiful North Carolina mountains — a picture perfect June affair!

Can you give us an overview of the event?: Our wedding was held in Cashiers, NC at Trillium Lake and Links Club. We loved the mountain views and the tranquility it provided. As we both live in New York City, we wanted a place that had natural beauty and was relaxing and fun. Cashiers fit the bill perfectly!

Was there a specific theme or style?: We wanted to let the natural beauty of the area and the mountains to be the focal point and theme. We wanted to focus on this beauty therefore we used the lake as the backdrop for our ceremony and used the mountain views as the backdrop for our reception

Now for the proposal… details!: We went to Aruba for vacation just before Christmas.  We had everything all planned out. Jeff said the first night we’d just eat at the hotel’s restaurant because our plane got in around 4pm and we might be tired that night. As we walk down to dinner, they begin to escort us away from the restaurant and into a private cabana.  We had a lovely meal right on the beach. Afterwards we went for a moon lit walk along the beach where jeff stopped and got down on one knee.  My response to him proposing was “of course!” and then “Wait, I can’t actually see what the ring looks like! We need to find light!”

What were your playful twists that made the event unique?: We were lucky enough to have fire-pits right near the reception, so guests were able to roast s’mores for desserts. We also had flip flops available for guests to relax their feet at the reception. We had a large wine bottle for everyone to sign. The large wine bottle matched the wine on the table from Kara’s Vineyard – my dad had been saving the bottles for our special day for 15 years (vineyard not actually related to Kara, just a coincidence)!

We want to know about all the wedding details.  Was it small and intimate or big and traditional?: It was about 135 people. We were shocked that so many people were able to make it! The closest airport is very small (and 75 minutes away) and everywhere. Less than 10 of our guests were from the area, so it meant a lot that everyone made the journey to celebrate with us!

Did you DIY any of the details?: We tried to do as much as we could ourselves. We did all the seating name tags (turned out very cute with moss and popcicle sticks), save the dates, menus and ceremony pamphlets. We dried rose petals  and made cones to be launched at us as we exited the ceremony. Jeff’s mom also did the flowers which was a great, personalized touch. We made all the directional signs and my mom made really cute chair signs for mrs. and mr.

Tell us about your wedding gown and what your wedding party wore.: I like to think of it as elegant and classic. I didn’t want the dress to wear me, I wanted to wear the dress. It was light, soft, and easy to move in. I added details to it. I made the belt detail and made it into a sweetheart. My mom also made the vail as a gift to me and sewed in a little message to me.  It was amazing.  My wedding party wore a cranberry short cocktail dress. Simple, understated but the color really popped on the mountains.

What was the most memorable moment?: That’s a tough question. There were so many things that we enjoyed! One special moment that I remember fondly was after the ceremony when we had a private minute to just sit back and soak everything in. It was so nice seeing our friends all around us, getting to know each other, and seeing friends from different part of our lives coming together to make our new, joint family.

Tell us about the food and desserts.: Jeff was most excited for the cake! He’s a man that loves his sweets and cake is definitely the way to his heart.  We went cake testing in cashiers but came away disappointed. Considering if costs a lot of money to fly down to cashiers to do another cake testing we came up with a new plan! We identified cake places in surrounding areas and asked them to fedex us overnight cake samples. Most were a little confused, had never done it, but were willing to give it a shot! We ended up with a fantastic lemon cake with buttercream icing. It was fantastic! We want to go back and buy another one from her!

What was the best wedding advice you received?: Try to slow down and take everything in. It’s the one day in your life where everyone who is the most important to you will be there all at the same time. Also, hire a videographer so you can remember everything and catch details that you didn’t get to see!

If there was one thing you could change, what would it be?: It rained for about an hour! Only thing that we would change. Everything else was what we could have imagined and more.

What were the honeymoon plans?: Two weeks in South Africa, Botswana and Zambia. It was a truly unforgettable vacation. The people were so friendly. We went from Cape Town to safari and saw the most amazing things! Cape Town has such natural beauty and on the safari, it was amazing being so close to wild animals-from lions, leopards and giraffes, to crocodiles and hippos, we saw it all – and so close too! It was just an amazing once in a life time experience.

Tying the Knot: Nautical Themes For Your Wedding

February 1st, 2012 by ChristinaHedges

Tying the knot? How about doing it literally? I’m talking about a nautical themed wedding, perfect for any land or seaside affair. In the past year, red, white, blue, stripes, brass buttons, and anchors infiltrated the fashion world. Brass buttoned suits, red and white bouquets, flower girls in anchor print dresses; there are endless ways to tie the nautical theme into your special day. Let me show you a few of my favorite ways.

Nautical invitation ideas are endless. There are simple elegant invitations that incorporate the nautical colors. Anchors, whether simple or elaborate, are another popular nautical invitation design. And then there’s my personal favorite, tying the knot. For example, the save-the-date post card above shows the nautical “tying the knot” twist with literal sailing knots. (Via Lottie Loves)

Anchors are the perfect nautical decoration as not only do they tie in with the theme but they can represent the anchoring of your love for each other. This symbol becomes the perfect decoration for your wedding from decorating your invitations to decorating your reception. Use anchor ornaments as guest cards to give guests their table numbers. They can even double as a party favor. (Via gretchent)

Centerpieces and table settings are another place to tie in your nautical theme. Beautiful flowers in red, blue, and white give your tables a classic wedding ambiance while still tying into your nautical theme. Want a little more? Add more decorations, like the “Ahoy” flag in the vase above. Dress-up your table settings with a nautical crab napkin ring or knot a piece of rope around the napkin with a fancy sailing knot. (Via Bayside Bride)

Finish off your nautical theme with your dessert table, as desserts are easiest to decorate with a theme. Petit lifesaver donuts make the perfect bite size dessert and the little flag labels top off the look. This beautiful blue coral wedding cake fits in perfectly with the nautical theme. Looking for something more classic? Have a classically decorated cake and make your wedding topper a boat. (Via Greer Loves)

Whether you decide to go all out with anchors and stripes or keep your celebration simple with a few nautical touches it’s sure to be a day to remember. The decorations are all a part of the fun, but the most important part of a wedding is the anchoring of each other’s love and tying those knots.
